Erick Schenkel has enjoyed a varied career in religious scholarship and practice. He earned four degrees from Harvard University: AB in European History, MTS from Harvard Divinity School, MA and PhD in The Study of Religion. His PhD dissertation, published as The Rich Man and the Kingdom (Fortress Press, 1995), focused on the religion and philanthropy of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. For ten years, Erick taught at Tashkent State University of World Languages and edited English language translations of works on Islamic culture. He then left academia for a series of roles in the global non-profit sector, continuing to learn about local religious practice in places such as the Middle East, Africa, India and China. Erick is a practicing Catholic and an advocate for interreligious dialogue in a spirit of humility, respect and willingness to learn.
