Most graduate students at FIU live in apartments off campus. While FIU does have both dormitories and apartments on campus, these, with or without meal plans, are expensive compared to off campus housing, particularly if students share apartments. In particular, TA stipends are not sufficient to support on campus housing and meals without great sacrifice in other areas. While the Department does not have a housing office of any kind, it is sometimes possible to link two students in need of apartment-mates. Also, out of area students may contact the Graduate Director, who may be able to find them shelter for a few days while they seek an apartment.
