Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies website! We are a department of sixteen full time faculty, sixteen adjuncts, ten teaching assistants, thirty -five graduate students, seventy majors and well over a hundred minors. We teach a variety of world religions, including Native American and African Religions, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, as well as in a number of themes that cross the boundaries of religion, including peace and conflict, sex and gender, environment, development, migration, health, new religious movements, and religious memorialization. Our faculty members are well published, and are known nationally and internationally.
Many of our undergraduate majors are double majors; most are interdisciplinary in their approach to religion. Some are actively involved in international research. We sponsor a competition for a funded summer course at the Jain Institute in Ladnun, India. Many of our MA students present papers at national and international conferences, and even publish in professional journals. Our MA graduates have gone on to doctoral programs at UC Berkeley (4), Claremont Graduate School, the University of Edinburgh (2), Boston University (2), Emory University, Arizona State University, the New School, and a number of universities in Asia and Europe.
